Construction on the new two-lane SH25 Ramarama Stream Bridge replacement kicks off next month near Whiritoa, eliminating holiday bottlenecks and boosting Coromandel transport resilience.
Aucklanders heading south towards the eastern Coromandel Peninsula are set for a smoother, far more resilient journey as NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi confirms construction on the critical SH25 Ramarama Stream Bridge replacement will officially break ground next month.
The existing single-lane timber and concrete structure, located just south of Whiritoa between Waihi and Whangamatā, has long operated as a frustrating bottleneck for weekend getaways, freight operators, and local commuters. The comprehensive infrastructure project will deliver a brand-new, modern two-lane bridge designed to withstand severe weather events and eliminate peak-season congestion.
State Highway 25 is the economic and social artery linking Auckland, the Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty to beloved coastal hubs like Whangamatā, Tairua, and Whitianga. Recent weather extremes over past summers underscored the urgent need for climate-resilient roading across the peninsula.
Initial site setup and enabling earthworks kick off in the coming weeks, with full-scale piling and bridge assembly starting next month. NZTA expects the new structure to be operational within 12 to 18 months, weather permitting.
Unlike previous repair works that required lengthy detours, contractors will construct the new bridge alongside the existing alignment. This ensures that State Highway 25 remains open throughout the majority of the build.
For Auckland holidaymakers and Coromandel business owners, the SH25 Ramarama Stream Bridge replacement represents another vital step in restoring confidence to the region’s transport network. Following recent repairs across the peninsula, this permanent upgrade guarantees durable, all-weather connectivity into one of New Zealand’s premier coastal playgrounds.
