With major changes to New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) taking effect tomorrow, 24 August 2026, here is your definitive guide to the new pathways, qualification points, and wage thresholds.
From tomorrow, 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand is officially implementing its overhauled Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) residence system. This transition marks one of the most significant structural shake-ups to skilled migration in years. If you are preparing to submit your application or have been waiting for the new rules to go live, understanding the operational shift is crucial for your migration journey.
The cornerstone of the new SMC is the simplified 6-point system, designed to streamline the assessment process. Applicants must secure a minimum of 6 points to be eligible, combining points from their professional qualifications, registration, or income, alongside points gained from New Zealand work experience.
Highly qualified applicants will find a more direct route to residence. Under the new scale:
For those without high-level academic qualifications, high income provides an alternative pathway to secure points. Earning at least 1.5 times the median wage can secure points, while those earning twice the median wage or more can claim up to 6 points directly, provided they hold an eligible skilled job offer with an accredited employer.
Alongside the structural points shift, Immigration New Zealand is introducing updated wage settings. All applicants must meet the new median wage threshold, which has been adjusted to reflect the current New Zealand economic climate. Having a skilled job or job offer with an accredited employer that meets these new wage thresholds is a non-negotiable prerequisite for the new SMC.
If you have already submitted your Expression of Interest (EOI) under the old system, your application will be processed under those historic criteria. However, any new applications initiated from tomorrow onwards must strictly comply with the 6-point rubric and the revised wage baselines. It is highly recommended to double-check your point tally against the new criteria before submitting to avoid costly application declines.
