Panic at Sea: Hantavirus Outbreak Hits Atlantic Cruise Ship

What was supposed to be a dream Atlantic crossing has turned into a medical nightmare. The cruise ship MV Hondius is currently anchored off the coast of Tenerife as specialized teams in hazmat suits begin evacuating nearly 150 passengers and crew following a deadly outbreak of Hantavirus.

Tragically, three passengers—a Dutch couple and a German woman—have already died. While the virus usually spreads through rodents, the WHO is investigating potential person-to-person transmission on board. Flights are being scrambled to repatriate passengers of over 20 nationalities, including those from New Zealand and Australia, directly to military hospitals for quarantine.

Thankfully, all remaining passengers are currently asymptomatic, but the “Andes virus” strain has sparked international concern due to its rare ability to jump between humans.
