The new Te Mahia Station pedestrian bridge opens on 24 August, bringing safer track crossing, accessibility upgrades, and key infrastructure shifts for Manurewa commuters as Auckland prepares for the City Rail Link.
Manurewa commuters are set for a safer, more seamless transit experience as the new Te Mahia Station pedestrian bridge officially opens on 24 August. Designed to replace legacy ground-level track crossings, the new overbridge provides direct, step-free access across the Southern Line tracks, dramatically improving safety for locals, school children, and daily train users.
The opening of the Te Mahia pedestrian bridge isn’t an isolated upgrade. It represents a critical piece of Auckland Transport’s broader infrastructure modernization ahead of the City Rail Link (CRL) opening. With CRL expected to significantly increase train frequency and speed across the entire network, removing high-risk pedestrian level crossings is essential to prevent service delays and safeguard pedestrians.
For residents living around Great South Road and the surrounding Manurewa neighbourhood, the new bridge changes daily pedestrian flow. Track-level access will be permanently closed, routing all foot traffic over the elevated structure. While this requires a short ramp incline for pedestrians, the elimination of waiting times at track gates and the dramatic reduction in collision risks make it a welcome evolution for the local community.
Auckland Transport and KiwiRail continue to make progress on removing priority level crossings across the metro region. As train services intensify, ground-level rail crossings pose growing operational and safety risks. The successful completion of the Te Mahia overbridge highlights ongoing efforts to create a modern, efficient, and safe public transport backbone for Tāmaki Makaurau.
