The new Te Mahia Station pedestrian bridge officially opens on 24 August, bringing critical safety upgrades and smoother access for Manurewa commuters as part of Auckland's CRL preparation.
Auckland commuters using the Southern Line are set for a safer, smoother journey as the new Te Mahia Station pedestrian bridge officially opens on 24 August. Located in Manurewa, this key infrastructure upgrade replaces the former ground-level track crossing, directly resolving long-standing safety concerns while supporting the broader modernization of Auckland’s passenger rail network.
For years, pedestrians at Te Mahia Station crossed directly over active railway tracks. With increased train frequencies and future network expansion, removing ground-level crossings has become an urgent priority for Auckland Transport and KiwiRail. The new footbridge provides a fully grade-separated route, ensuring safe access between Great South Road and station platforms.
The opening of the Te Mahia pedestrian bridge is not an isolated project. It forms a crucial piece of Auckland’s wider level-crossing removal program designed to prepare the rail network for the City Rail Link (CRL). Once the CRL opens, train frequency across South Auckland will rise dramatically, making old pedestrian level crossings both impractical and unsafe.
Starting 24 August, the old surface pedestrian crossing will be permanently closed and fenced off. Passengers accessing Te Mahia Station from nearby residential streets and bus connections along Great South Road will be directed seamlessly onto the new bridge structure. Local commuters are advised to allow a few extra minutes during the initial days to familiarize themselves with the new station flow.
