The landscape of green mass transit shifted permanently today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially flagged off India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered fuel cell passenger train—the NaMo Green Rail—from the Jind railway station in Haryana, anchoring a massive day-long multi-state infrastructure tour exceeding ₹25,000 crore in value.

While standard electric trains rely heavily on a constant grid draw and diesel engines choke environments with heavy particulates, this indigenous breakthrough acts as a self-sustaining powerhouse on wheels, charting a completely new path for sustainable mobility.

How the NaMo Green Rail Works: The Chemical Engine Breakdown

Developed entirely utilizing cutting-edge indigenous engineering, the 10-coach train operates as a true mobile power plant. Rather than relying on traditional external overhead electrical cables or standard combustion engines, it generates its energy completely onboard.

The core system pairs high-pressure onboard hydrogen storage with an integrated fuel cell system and specialized lithium ferro phosphate batteries. Atmospheric oxygen is pulled into the fuel cells, where it mixes with the pressurized hydrogen. This chemical reaction generates high-voltage electricity to feed the train’s massive 3,200 horsepower (HP) propulsion system—making it one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trainsets currently running anywhere on Earth.

The ultimate kicker? The only by-products released during this entire high-power generation process are simple water vapour and heat, resulting in absolute zero tailpipe carbon emissions and drastically reduced operational acoustics compared to loud legacy diesel fleets.

Route Details, Speeds, and Public Rollout

For its maiden commercial phase, the train is assigned to the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana. Built with a structural design speed capability of 110 km/h, the train will carry up to 682 passengers per run at a highly stable operational speed of 75 km/h. To keep the project running seamlessly, a specialized 3,000-kg capacity cryogenic hydrogen fueling facility has been constructed at Jind, complete with an advanced chilling plant to handle high-pressure distribution safely.

A Bigger ₹25,000-Crore Vision for the Region

The green train set the stage for a broader regional infrastructure overhaul across Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab. Alongside the historic rail launch, the Prime Minister dedicated critical new healthcare facilities to the nation—including the highly anticipated Advanced Mother and Child Centre at PGIMER Chandigarh—and officially opened initial access-controlled packages of the massive Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, fundamentally altering transit timelines across northern India.
