Forecasters are sounding the alarm as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu intensifies into a Category 3 system. Currently positioned south of Fiji with winds reaching 130km/h, the storm is increasingly likely to strike the North Island this weekend.

MetService meteorologists warn of “potentially life-threatening winds” and hazardous coastal conditions starting Sunday morning. Auckland, Northland, and the East Coast are currently in the high-risk zone.
